If you’re starting to read up on SEO, then you may feel a little like you missed the boat. Search engine optimization was once a pretty simple affair, with all kinds of shortcuts and child’s play tactics that would bump your online business swiftly to the top of an SERP. Now, it’s much more complex, and incorporates countless different factors which need to be taken into account. Still, it’s important not to lose sight of the basics. Here are a few rudimentary tips for SEO beginners.
Develop your Content Marketing Strategy from Day One
Content marketing is nothing new. However, with the introduction of more and more facets of Google’s search algorithm, the growing importance of brand awareness, the rise of new social networks and many other things, getting your content strategy in place from the beginning is essential. Once you’ve defined your goals, research the best kind of content for helping you reach those goals. Blog posts, infographics, images and video all have their benefits and drawbacks, and you need to achieve the perfect balance if you want to see any solid results. This is going to take some trial and error, so get started immediately!
Test, Test and Test Again!
I can’t stress this enough, so listen up the first time! Every respectable learning resource like Gotch SEO goes on and on about the importance of testing, and yet countless business owners still manage to neglect it. Once you’ve developed your content marketing strategy, and you’ve pinned down the resources you’re going to use to measure its success, it’s important not to become complacent about your SEO. From UX testing to title optimization to landing page designs, there are many factors which will affect your overall conversion rates, and I can guarantee you that at least something can be improved. However, to really get a handle on how you should be improving your site, you should always, always be testing. Sometimes the smallest modifications, like where you place your call to action button, can have a profound impact on your bottom line. The longer you test, the more material you’ll have for comparison, so don’t brush over this!
Don’t Get Too Wrapped Up in Rankings
On the subject of measuring your success, you need to avoid one common mistake made by a lot of SEO newbies: becoming too wrapped up in the rankings themselves. Ranking under a certain phrase on Google is good, but it doesn’t necessarily mean success. Is that key phrase driving the right traffic? Are your website visitors actually converting? When does the average visitor leave your website? These are important questions you need to answer to really gauge how successful your overall SEO efforts are. The metrics that are most important to you are all defined by your individual business goals, so I’m afraid I can’t give you a definite answer to what you should be looking at. However, don’t get to the top of an SERP and think that the hard work is over!
