Search Engine Optimization or SEO is definitely one of the most important yet often overlooked factors in tech today.
In a nutshell, SEO are the tactics used to increase the amount of visitors that find your site. If you've ever wondered why your site doesn't show up high ranking in online searches when you Google it, SEO is usually the culprit.
In a world where billions of people search for sites every hour, and so many businesses are competing for ranking spots, it’s essential we stay updated with all the SEO goings on.
It often seems however that once we master one SEO technique, then another comes along that means we have to change our website and keep up with the best practices.
To keep you up to date, we'll break down some of the key SEO trends that are shaping the world in 2018 and beyond:
Voice Searches Are Rising
2017 saw the rise in virtual assistants throughout the world. It felt like every major technology brand released some sort of smart speaker that had a built-in assistant like Alexa, Siri, or whoever the Google Home’s AI is. As a consequence, more and more people began searching for things via voice search. They’d ask their speakers to search for things, and the speaker would present the results. This means websites will now have to focus on optimizing themselves for this particular type of search. The main issue is figuring out how to use keywords that are likely to be triggered in voice search. Instead of focusing on very rigid phrases and words, you may need to shift to more conversational keywords.
The Importance Of Sitemaps
Sitemaps have been around for ages, but they’re now more important than ever before. To put it as simply as can be; every website needs a site mapper of sorts to help provide information on the entire website. It gives users the ability to navigate around the site, which improves their experience, and enables you to convert more traffic. But, most importantly, a sitemap will make it far easier for search engine bots to crawl their way through your site. They can index each page properly, and make sure that the right people find these pages when they’re searching for the right keywords. In modern SEO, a website without a sitemap can wave goodbye at the possibility of ranking in the key spots at the top end of the results.
Don't Sleep On Speed
When websites were first developed, they were much slower than they are today. Year by year, technology advances in so many incredible ways. As a result, consumers have certain expectations that they need to be fulfilled. One of those is the speed with which a website loads its pages. If a site takes too long to load, then it won’t survive in today’s world. The faster your site is, the better it will rank; simple. Slow websites are facing bigger penalties than ever before as there’s just no excuse to not have a site that loads in under three seconds. Technology allows us to have this extreme speed, so your website needs to use it!
Finding Relevance In Content
For years, everyone ran with the phrase ‘content is king’. As long as your website had content that used keywords, it would rank highly. Nowadays, there’s a growing trend that means content on its own isn’t enough. Instead, the focus is on relevant content. You need to show search engines that the content on your site is relevant to each page. Google is getting smarter and smarter, and it can tell when content isn’t relevant and when it’s merely there to try and improve SEO. So, keyword stuffing is a thing of the past, and you must make sure that your content relates to everything else on the page and provides value.
Mobile Search Is DominantWe’ve touched upon the rise of voice search, and this has also led to the increase in mobile search. In fact, mobile search now makes up over 60% of all searches on Google. Think about that for a second. It means the majority of searches are conducted using mobile devices. Therefore, websites desperately need to get into the mobile game and ensure they rank highly in mobile searches. Needless to say, the primary concern is having a mobile-friendly website. If you don’t have this, you just won’t rank; it’s as simple as that.
If there’s one thing we can take away from this post it’s that SEO is way more complicated than it used to be. Gone are the days where you could just stuff keywords everywhere and spam links to your site around the web. Now, it’s a much more technical realm that requires plenty of patience. I think the most interesting aspect for me is how technology such as AI assistance and mobile device has shaped/is shaping the SEO landscape. It begs the question, what future tech will come along and change things again?
