Sasha Talks Tech goes one-on-one with CEO Emily Webb on startup life and tips for the next generation of entrepreneurs.
Sasha Talks Tech: How do you feel as a woman in today's growing tech industry?
Emily Webb: I feel honored and fortunate to be a CEO who is launching an industry disrupting app. Being a woman in tech is an incredible opportunity and I’m so proud to help pave the way for future women entrepreneurs who are looking to advance their career in the tech space.
STT: Did you have prior experience in the industry or is this a brand new venture for you?
EW: This venture is new for me; however I am able to apply my talents and knowledge from previous industries to building a successful company.
STT:How did the idea for this app first come to fruition?
EW: I was living in Hollywood and commuting to Brentwood for work and had to find street parking every day. My daily schedule began to revolve around parking because of the amount of time I spent in my car looking for street space, or taking time out of my day to move the car for street cleaning, or handling parking tickets every other week. I noticed driveways in both Hollywood and Brentwood sitting empty all day, and that was when the idea to make better use of underutilized parking space really resonated with me.
STT: When you realized you had a great idea on your hands, what were the first few steps taken to bring this idea to reality?
EW: The first steps were to get the legal structure in place, conduct R&D and get a grasp on the financial projections.
STT: As you know, there are new technological advances appearing everyday. How do feel your app competes within the current market?
EW: Technology is always evolving and luckily, we have an incredible CTO who is current on new advancements and keeps our platform on the forefront of technological innovation. Based on the infrastructure we’ve built, I know our app is and will continue to be a competitive influence in the share economy.
STT: I loved the animated demo on the site, as well as the overall look of the app itself. How involved were you with the designing of it all?
EW: Thank you! I was and still am involved with all of the designs for the website, app and video.
STT: I see you have teamed up with CTO Anthony Wentzel and Co-Founder Tracy Moody. How did you first get involved with each other? Have they been involved from the very beginning? Can you explain their roles a bit?
EW: I met Tracy through a close friend, at which point he conveyed his interest in getting involved in different investment opportunities. Tracy was involved in establishing the company, building the infrastructure and is focused on high level decisions and growth strategies. A year later, we brought on Anthony through an established recruiter to build the entire platform selection, technical architecture and much more.
STT: When in this process did you decide to invite the general public to have a new money-making platform with your app? Did you always intend for the app to be like the 'Airbnb of parking'?
EW: We’ve designed the app for Parkers only, to make on-demand, hourly, daily, weekly and monthly reservations in private spaces, so yes, the idea was always to be the ‘Airbnb of parking’. Our website is an easy to use online platform where parking space providers can list and rent out their underutilized private parking. We have not veered away from this business model, we just evolve continuously to make a better product for our users.
STT: Do you plan on expanding to other cities? If so, what lucky city is next? I'm from Miami and I know from personal experience that this app will be amazing for the South Beach area. Parking gets crazy there!
EW: Great recommendation for a city, and the beauty of this business model is that so many people see the potential for this type of parking solution in their home town! As of now, we are determined to bring a viable parking solution to Los Angeles and are cognizant of the appropriate processes that need to be taken in every city across Los Angeles County. We want to do it right and give the people what they want in Los Angeles before expanding.
STT: How have your peers liked the app? Has the general public responded well to it so far? Good reviews?
EW: Feedback from peers, the general public and users has been extremely positive. People want a parking solution, especially in congested areas or for the everyday commuter, but also, people would love to engage in a platform that makes them money while practically doing nothing!
STT: Do you feel that your vision was brought to life as you intended? How satisfied are you with the overall outcome?
EW: It is so satisfying and gratifying to see my vision executed. I have learned so much from building this business model and kept my expectations conservative because there are so many variables and unknowns when constructing a startup. Overall, I am so proud of what we’ve built and cannot say that there is an outcome. The outcome is the longevity of the business; a constant ebb and flow of progressions, setbacks, opportunities and accomplished milestones.
STT: What's next for Emily Webb? Will the tech world be seeing more from you in the future? Anything else in the works?
EW: I hope to engage in more projects in the future and contribute to helping great people do great things, but for now, I have one priority and that is staying focused and making sure I am putting forth my best every day for the company, the users, the investors, and myself.
