It contributes to the culture, let’s visitors know instantly what your business is all about, and determines just how productive - and ultimately successful - it is. If your business is going well and you’re thinking about upgrading your office space, then you’ll be presented with an opportunity to create a space that really sets your company apart from other companies. It’ll be your chance to take your business to the future, and to improve some of the practices that may be holding you back. Here are ten tips to ensure your new office is everything you hoped it would be and more.
Finding the Right Space
You’re not bound by the types of offices we have in our mind when we think of a traditional office space. Because we’re living in a digital world, it’s less important that you’re right in the mix of the action, so you don’t necessarily need to have a flashy downtown location. Being in a trendy part of town does have its advantages, but it’s more important that you find the space that is right for your business. Many companies now are looking at offices that are more out of town, as they’re bigger and offer more potential when it comes to creating a space in line with your company ethos (and they can be cheaper).
Putting Your Stamp On It
The space is just the shell of your new office. It’s up to you to put your own stamp on it and design it in the image of your company. How you do this depends on the nature of your company and the image you’re trying to project, but if you’re trying to define yourself as a company for the future, then it’s important that you think outside of the box and create a space that fosters creativity and progressive thinking. In this day and age, there’s no reason for an office to be solely focused on all work and no play.

You already have a set of employees who will be making the move to the new office with you, why not ask for their opinion? If you think they’ll be with the company for a long time, then it makes to find out what they would like to see in the office. If they feel happy and comfortable in the office, then they’ll be able to work better. Asking them for their input will also show that you value their opinion, which is a driving factor in boosting employee engagement (which, if you don’t know, is highly important to the success of a company).

This is difficult for some companies because their practices are so ingrained, but if you’re moving to a new office then you can include the things you need to be environmentally friendly. Promoting recycling, having a storage space for bikes that allow workers to cycle to work, and getting involved with environmental projects will all make you more eco-friendly.
Your team needs the platform to collaborate effectively. If you’re setting up a new office, you can include these platforms in it. For example, you might want to include a zone that specifically caters for groups who want to work together. You’re setting up a new office, but this actually gives you the chance to think about changing your employee working habits...and perhaps not even having them there. Not having paper has bags of benefits, including saving money, reducing time looking for files, and also being good for the environment.
Setting up a new office does give you the opportunity to review how you’ve been working and make subtle, but key improvements, but a new environment doesn’t mean you’ll effortlessly become a better company. You’ll have to work just as hard to maintain the standards that brought you success in the first place. If you’ve designed your office just right, then it should naturally emit the kind of culture you want from the office, but make sure you’re helping it along at the same time, too.
It’s an exciting time to up sticks and create a new space. Take your time, think outside the box, and create an office that really speaks to who you are as a company. You’ll hopefully be in these offices for years to come, and will grow even bigger while you’re there.
