There are thousands of web designers out there today. Many of them will have more experience, and likely more skills than you. However, you shouldn’t let that stop you from pursuing this career. If you enjoy web design and it’s something you feel you could do for a living, all you need to do is make sure you differentiate yourself from the rest. This is how to do it!
Be Proactive By Going To Your Clients
Many web designers who are starting out freelance are reluctant to go and get their clients. They simply set up and wait for clients to come to them. While this can work if your work is good enough, being proactive when it comes to finding your clients means you’ll stay ahead of the game. This doesn’t mean you should be pushy by any means, it simply means being smart and knowing when your services could be called for. New business opening? Go and drop off your card. Network with everyone you can think of, not just those in the same industry. You’ll get web design clients coming out of your ears!
Do Your Homework On A Client/Their Business
This should be a compulsory part of any web designer’s process. If you haven’t truly done the research on your client and their business, how can you know that your design will be suitable for them? You need to ensure that it fits them as a business and that it’ll work in the industry too. You need to do as much research as you can and ask many questions to get it right!
List Your Prices
Many web designers shy away from listing their prices on their websites. They do this in the hopes that people will contact them, where they can discuss it and break down the prices further. However, this is something that can put many people off. By listing your prices as specifically as you can, you’ll automatically differentiate yourself, and could very well find yourself getting more conversions thanks to your transparency.
Don’t be afraid to share your knowledge and expertise by blogging/vlogging. You’ll be able to discuss a number of different web design and business related things this way, and even show off your personality a little in the process.
Send A Thank You Gift
The whole experience that a client has with you is going to determine whether they are happy, recommend you to others, and choose to work with you again. Why not send a thank you gift? This could be anything, from a small bag of chocolate to something related to your industry.
Only Put Your Best Work Out There
It goes without saying you should only ever put your best work out there. Your portfolio will speak for itself, and you want all of your clients to recommend you and continue to work with you. Make sure you do your utmost to ensure total happiness from your clients.
Use these tips and your web design business should thrive!
