Striking out alone in business and moving from a steady office job to one you run yourself, is a scary prospect for some. Working for yourself and getting a business from an idea to a fully-functioning company is a bucket list item to be ticked off, and if you can do it from home rather than from a paid office, you’re going to drastically reduce your overheads. Many solopreneurs choose to work from the comfort of a home office purely for cost reasons, and others do it for comfort. It’s not an easy feat, though, working from home. If you have a family, you need to be able to carve out a space that is entirely yours where you won’t be interrupted. This isn’t always possible, especially if you don’t have a spare bedroom or an office space to work out of.
Being able to concentrate on your work and stay motivated is important, and to do this you need to ensure that your work space is perfectly set up to support your day to day activities and routines. Don’t worry, though. We’ve got some of the best secrets to give you so that your home office is a space of calm, inspiration and success.
Set A Schedule
Working from home isn’t like working at an office. In an office, you are clocked in from nine to five, or you have roughly set hours around this timeframe. At home, you can often feel guilty if you aren’t working continuously and it can be very difficult to separate yourself from your work life so that you can concentrate on your family life. By having a dedicated schedule and clearly set hours, you can still find a balance between working and spending time with family. It also protects you with clients, as you are setting out a clear time you will deal with business inquiries. The key will be to ensure that you stick to this, though. It can be very tempting to answer calls for work even though you’re not supposed to be working!
Time for a "Tech Up"
Your gaming laptop may be fast and loaded with the best of the best in terms of games, but it’s not going to be any good to you when it comes to work. You also may need much more than just a laptop! Printing equipment, security software, excellent internet speed with services like Optimum.com and the right telephone service are all important components. You need to be efficient and the only way to do that is to invest a little cash in your business. Technology is developing rapidly, and this means that you need to keep up with it if you hope to be a success in your field.
Organization is Everything
When you work in an office building, it’s common to have a cleaner tidy up at the end of a long day. When you work from home, this is up to you. Clutter can be a huge distraction, and you need to keep your workspace as clutter-free as possible. This means cutting down on the non-essentials, keeping wires and cables as tidy as possible and keeping any bulky office machinery stored away properly.
We’ve mentioned how hard it can be to separate work and home life, but sometimes it’s not going to be just you moseying into what the family is doing. Sometimes, you can find yourself disrupted with unnecessary interruptions. You need to set clear boundaries to let people know that you may be physically in the house, but that doesn’t mean you are to be considered as ‘home’.
Your family needs to allow you to work if you want to earn an income and be a success, so enforcing those boundaries is pretty important!
Getting in some well-chosen house plants to give your office color and contribute to a healthy work life is a smart idea. It’s nice to have something alive in the office with you while you are surrounded by all the work, and a plant can do just that. Make a point of looking into getting an office pet; a cat, or even a dog. With the lack of human contact, a pet can make you feel far less lonely and give you a good reason to feel grounded.
Act Like You Share An Office
Getting out of bed and working in your pajamas can often be tempting. Avoid this by getting yourself smartened up and dressed in the mornings, as if you have a commute to go on. It can be very depressing to sit around in bedclothes and getting smartened up and dressed for the day can give you the healthy mindset that you need to be ready and focused for work.
