Construction is one of the fastest growing industries right now. Housing crises and increased business activity mean that there is an abundance of work out there, you just need to go and find it. But don’t get complacent and think that anybody can just start a construction company and get rich quick. There are so many mistakes you can make that will bring the whole thing tumbling down, these are some of the top ones.

Ignoring Health And Safety

You’re probably guilty of this already, most construction companies have skipped a few health and safety regulations in their time, but it’s really not worth your time. Some of them are pointless, I don’t disagree with that, but if you get caught breaking any regulations you can get fined or the site will get shut down until everything is bought up to scratch which is just going to lose you money.

You’re also going to lose money if somebody gets injured and you’re a man down for the rest of the job. That’s why most of those health and safety regulations exist. It’s not as much of a problem as it once was because new technology can pick up the slack a lot of the time.

However, safety is still important, especially when you’re using heavy machinery. If something goes wrong and somebody gets seriously hurt, you’ll find yourself in a whole world of expensive trouble. Whenever you’re using heavy machinery use decent quality rig mats from somebody like http://northernmat.ca/products/rig-mats/. They’re not expensive and they make the whole operation far safer. Beyond that, you should always be wearing your protective clothing and getting all of your tools safety checked regularly. You already know the regulations, you just need to make sure you stick to them.

No Written Contract

The worst customers are those ones that suddenly decide halfway through an extension that they don’t want the window in the place that you first agreed on. Could you just brick it up and move it over to this wall? When it comes to charging them, you can ask to be paid for the extra work and any decent person will give you the money. But some people will argue until they’re blue in the face. It’s situations like this where you need a written contract that outlines exactly what work is agreed for the price, then you can prove that they owe you for extra bits you’ve done. Bad Costing

When you give a quote to a customer you should have accurately costed all of the materials, including a bit extra in case of any problems. Then add your labor costs on and you’ve got a solid quote. Problem is, a lot of construction companies end up just making an educated guess. If you know what you’re talking about this is fine but if you get it wrong you’re either charging too little or you’re quoting people extremely high and you won’t get the jobs in the first place. There’s no need to give the customer a quote there and then, it looks more professional and it’s more accurate if you go away, crunch the numbers and then send them a quote over later.

The construction company is fairly safe, but if you make any of these fatal errors, the whole thing will collapse.
