If you’ve had your computer for a while, there’s a good chance that it is full of mystery files, abandoned downloads, and pictures that you haven’t looked at in years. This sort of clutter can make your computer slow and sluggish and do nothing but increase frustration when searching through Amazon.
With a little break coming up, now is a good time of year to comb through your computer and throw out anything that has gotten in the way. Consider it a digital spring clean to enter the new year with a clear mind, and a clearer hard drive.
The desktop is one of the screens you see the most on your computer. It is your home; it is where you access your favorite programs. Because of this, it can easily get filled with folder after folder, and file after file and make it an eyesore, almost an embarrassment and testament to your poor organizational skills.
Thankfully, help is on hand and there’s no need to go through everything manually. If you are a Mac user, there are programs that will help you declutter your desktop in no time at all, as well as helping you keep it as clean and organised as you like. Similarly, Windows has plenty of options for keeping the desktop neat and tidy.
Once the tricky desktop is out of the way, it is now time to tackle the myriad of files and folders that are lurking in your documents. If the desktop seemed bad, navigating through a maze of poorly-named files (that you definitely, 100% thought you would remember at the time) could be akin to spending a night in one of the nine circles of Hell.
But, if you have the time, it can actually be a lot of fun going through old memories, laughing at silly little poems you wrote when you were a teenager and wondering why on earth you saved this recipe for green cheeseburgers.
The key to organizing your documents is just that: organisation. While there might be programs to do it for you, you’ll want to ensure that nothing beloved goes missing, and for this reason, it is easier to complete manually. Label folders, rename documents, and most importantly of all, delete any documents you don’t need.
Programs and Applications
Another reason that your computer might be running a bit slow is all of the unused programs and applications you still have. Finding them is easy enough, it is just up to you to delete as you see fit. However, this comes with a danger of deleting something important, particularly if it is named something you don’t recognise. To ensure that you don’t delete something that you actually use, consider opening the program to make sure. If you still don’t know what it does, it probably can be done away with, at your own risk. While an uninstall feature is available on all computers, this can take a long time, but there are solutions to streamline the process.
So, when going into the new year, it would be nice to enter it with a faster and more efficient computer. Much of this can be done in a day, and once you’ve thoroughly purged your PC of unneeded files, you’ll wonder how you ever survived without it.
