The internet offers ample opportunity for a business or a person to build a connection with an audience, fostering trust and building fruitful relationships. Profits can be made and networks created. But that won’t happen if you don’t do anything to differentiate yourself from any of the less scrupulous sites on the web. There are plenty of sites willing to abuse people’s trust. Make sure yours doesn’t look like theirs.
If you want people to trust what you say you do, you need to put your name on the line a little. An About Us page isn’t just an excuse to waffle on about what you have to offer visitors. It’s the right place to put your name and your face, to make it easy to contact you via address, email, or telephone. If people see a real identity behind a site, then they know they’re not dealing with the shadier kind of folk who would prefer to appear anonymous.
Don’t tolerate downtime
The only thing worse than not having a transparent display of yourself available is not having a whole section of the site available. Unresponsive sites aren’t just going to look horrible when people try to access them on devices that are getting more and more commonly used. If your site looks like that, you’re doing it wrong. It might be changing the links on the front page, or updating content, but however you do it, you need to update a site if you want it to stay successful. The same goes for your social media channels. Don’t let them lie there. They do more harm than good when they go unused. Either commit to them or close them.
For a website to look trustworthy, it needs to actually be trustworthy. It needs to be secure. If you’re getting people to give you financial details, make sure you have the ‘https’ in your URL to signify the site is safe to use. More people will check it than you imagine. Keeping it free from comment spam, from dubious ads and the like is just as important. Curate your advertisers carefully and keep the user interactive parts of the site from being abused by making them impervious to bots.
Fostering trust is crucial on the internet. You need people to be able to see that they have a secure connection, that you put enough of yourself out there to hold yourself accountable, and that the site actually does what it’s supposed to.
