Hire Smart, Not Fast
When you’re trying to crank up production, you take on lots of new people to man the lines. In these situations, some owners will be tempted to make a quick hire, just to fill the position. This isn’t a good idea. An untrained employee is a liability and is far more likely to be injured in an unfamiliar environment. A much better approach is to carefully select candidates who have the right skills for your particular setup, otherwise somebody is likely to get hurt.
Smart business owners know how important it is to develop a culture of safety early right from the get go. They believe that there’s always time to do things safely and that it’s unacceptable to work in a dangerous manner. As a result, these bosses put their workers through lots of training, including liquid & material handling courses. At the end of the process, the idea is to have workers who are as committed to workplace safety as they are. By constantly emphasizing safety, you’ll soon notice that your colleagues begin self-policing, and suddenly acting in a dangerous way is no longer acceptable.
Show That You Value Safety
No Job Is Without Risk
Some employers treat safety as an absolute, without realizing that no job can ever be entirely safe. Fortunately, this attitude is mainly in the public sector, meaning that it’s not something that usually affects business. But there are ways to approach a job that make it safer.
Safety can be a hard sell, but if you get it right, you can reduce the risks your company and your staff face.
