Most businesses are realizing that if they want to succeed, they need to have an online presence including social media, but more importantly a website.
However, in many ways, the internet is the new Wild West. It’s not a safe place to be if you’re unaware of the dangers. Those dangers are magnified when you have a site and you have a responsibility to guarantee not just your own safety but that of any customers or visitors.
So, what are those risks? Read on for the deets.
Spam is only one of the ways that your site might have to suffer from unwanted downtime. Dedicated denial of service attacks have become the recent weapon of bored and angry surfers looking to cause some damage, too. One way to get around any source of downtime is to make sure you have a backup. For instance, using Cloud web hosting services could get a copy of your site up and running in little time flat. Otherwise, look at preventing things like DDOS by using a mitigation company that can help divert some of the traffic.
That’s not to say that they can’t try and gain access directly from the site itself. If you have customers, their data can get stolen and used to commit fraud. Improving verification methods can make it a lot easier for customers to protect their data, for one. But the data on the site can be stolen by hackers, too. To that end, look into encryption methods so that, even in the event of a hack, data is kept safe. It’s a good idea to use the services of ethical hackers to help you identify and plug holes in the site, as well.
Website security, whether it’s from seemingly benign issues like spam and downtime to serious threats like viruses and hacking, is essential. Don’t launch your site unless you’re willing to spend some money and effort in keeping it safe.
