Many people dream of having a robot vacuum cleaner.
But online stores offer so huge variety of models that it is not always possible to sort out this diversity.
So, what robot vacuum cleaner is better to choose for home? And how?
This article is meant to help you form an opinion and make the right choice.
First of all, you must clear up the technical characteristics, as a robot vacuum cleaner, like any device, has certain parameters that its effectiveness depends on. Let’s see them in order.
This is the first thing to note. After all, a model designed for cleaning small apartments of up to 48 sq.yd. can not perfectly clean an apartment of 120 sq.yd. This parameter is usually specified in the technical characteristics, but you can also calculate it on your own. Take the time of the robot operation in minutes, deduct 10 and you will get an approximate area that this model can clean best.
This parameter may seem not so important at first glance, but it means a lot in practice. A robot vacuum cleaner is of little use if it gets stuck on every corner. The best barrier-cross ability is shown today by iRobot Roomba robots. These models easily “jump” over thresholds of up to 0.8 in. and do not get tangled in cables. Cheap no name robots, on the contrary, almost always have poor barrier-cross ability, but their manufacturers always try to hide this detail.
Soft touch mode
Most models of robot vacuums have a spring-loaded bumper that softens the shock at bumping into an obstacle, but it is not always enough. If you have unstable items on the floor (vases, floor lamps) or delicate furniture, then you can get reinsured and choose a model with a “soft touch” function. Such vacuum cleaner has proximity sensors and can “slow down” before an obstacle. But if this doesn’t bring comfort to you as well, then you better choose lighter models. For example, iRobot and Neato robots weight about 9 lbs and more, iClebo only 6.5 lbs (due to a lighter Li-ion battery). So even if proximity sensors fail, the impact force of such robot is much less.
This function is not paramount, but it is important if you want to minimize your participation in cleaning. You can just set the schedule and a robot will go to perform the task and return to the base on its own. Almost all advanced models are equipped with this function.
Dust collector capacity
Another important parameter. It is better not to choose a robot vacuum cleaner with a dust collector capacity of less than 0.3 liter, especially if you have pets. For a small apartment (up to 60 sq.yd.) models with a 0.3 liter capacity are fine, for apartments of up to 95 sq.yd. - up to 0.5 liter capacity, for cleaning rooms over 95 sq.yd. a dust collector must be of 0,5-1 liter.
Air Filtration System
Almost all robots vacuum cleaner manufacturers claim that their models have HEPA air filters. But in practice a detailed inspection of the filter often shows that it is just a thin layer of filter paper. Of course, it is difficult to determine the filter effectiveness by sight, but multi-layer filters are still more trustworthy.
Besides a robot, the packaging often includes additional accessories such as a remote control, movement limiters, coordinators, spare filters and brushes. If everything is clear with the latter (a spare is always good), the necessity of other elements is often doubtful. A remote control can be a useful accessory, but far from necessary. Ideally, a robot must do everything on its own and there is no need to interfere into its activity. A motion limiter (virtual wall) can be useful if you have places in the house, a robot is best to stay away from (an aquarium on the floor or a corner with pet bowls) or if you want to clean only certain rooms. Motion coordinators are navigational devices used by the latest models of robot vacuum cleaners.
Service maintenance and availability of consumables
It is extremely important if you do not want to throw your purchase into a bin in a year or even earlier. Today, the market is flooded with cheap models of unclear production without any service support and guarantee. You must choose robots vacuum cleaners, which manufacturers have official service centers.
Consumables are also very important. Failure of a filter or brush will make your robot useless. Make sure that consumables to your model are easy to find and buy.
I hope that this article was useful to you and you have found an answer to the question - what robot vacuum cleaner to choose?
