Here are some tips on how you can make it through the second year of your start up unscathed...
First of all, you need to learn how to communicate with people effectively, both your clients and with the people who work for you. Professionalism must be maintained at all times - even if you feel angry, you need to learn to take a deep breath and count to ten before calming down. Remember that openness and honesty are things that the people you work with will always appreciate - the best way to do business is for people to trust you.
It’s important that you make sure that you stay curious about the world around you. One of the fastest tracks to failure is if you assume that you know everything already. On the contrary, you need to be aware that things constantly change and that you need to keep up with the world. Talk to other people in your industry at conferences like the ASSE annual conference and other similar ones within your field, and make sure that you keep networking and sharing ideas.
Keep Surrounding Yourself With Good People
If you have a good team, it’s vital that you keep them around you. Of course, you can do that with a generous salary, bonuses and benefits, but more than anything you need to ensure that you treat the bright sparks on your team well. Listen to their ideas and acknowledge their contributions. It’s important to point out when people succeed as well as showing them where they can do better in the future.
No matter how many clients you managed to pull in through your first year, you’ll probably learn pretty quickly that your first challenge comes when you have to keep them through your second year too. Once your start up has lost its novelty value, your clients may start looking elsewhere, which means that you have to work extra hard to keep them with you. Remember that at no point does starting your own business become easy - hard work is always necessary.
